An appropriate intervention and one considered an essential part of primary care for older adults, is to simply ask the question: Do you feel you have a hearing loss? This question has been shown to have reasonable sensitivity and specificity for hearing impairment. The vol-ume of the television and the response to a ringing telephone can be affected by variables other than hearing loss. The question regarding glasses and a hearing aide can be perceived as insensitive.
