Answer to Question 1

Many people associate yoga with postures that stretch, strengthen, and relax the muscles. However, another important component is yogic breathing (called pranayama in Sanskrit), which helps to energize the body, quiet the mind, and clarify perception.

Answer to Question 2

The two major types of breathing patterns are chest or thoracic breathing and diaphragmatic or abdominal breathing (sometimes called belly breathing).
