Drugs work because they resemble chemicals produced naturally in the body. Addictive drugs activate the brain's pleasure circuit, known as the mesolimbic dopamine system, altering the way in which the pleasure center and other parts of the brain function. Psychoactive drugs affect chemical neurotransmission, either enhancing, suppressing, or interfering with it.
