Betina's grandfather recently died of heart disease. However, as a 21-year-old female, she is not concerned about her risk factors. Should she be concerned? Why or why not?

Answer: She should be concerned because the conditions that lead to heart disease develop earlier in life. One study showed that 21 of youths with diabetes already had at least two risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Also, she has a family history of cardiovascular disease since her grandfather died of heart disease.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: A diet that is high in fiber and complex carbohydrates, low in sodium and saturated fat, and moderate in alcohol and plant-based fats may reduce a person's risk by 36.
