The standard communication protocols of imaging devices are called digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM).
The use of PACS to transmit and store digital images offers new speed in transmission of digital images. The copy is available as soon as the original. There is no need to move patients to a facility that has better imaging equipment. PACS moves the images and makes the images available to any authorized physician.
