Answer to Question 1

Unstructured observations generally provide a broader scope of observation, so if a researcher did not have a good idea of what behaviors might be the most important and most interesting, it would be a good idea to monitor a large sample of different behaviors. When it becomes clearer what behaviors are going to be most useful to observe and study, then more focused, structured observations will provide the greatest payoff with less attention to behaviors that are less relevant for the research program.

Answer to Question 2

(a) Continuous real-time measurement involves recording how long behaviors persist during the observation period.
(b) Time-point sampling involves selecting points in time to observe behavior to see if a particular behavior is occurring.
(c) Time-interval sampling involves determining whether a critical behavior has occurred within a particular time interval.

Many people have small pouches in their colons that bulge outward through weak spots. Each pouch is called a diverticulum. About 10% of Americans older than age 40 years have diverticulosis, which, when the pouches become infected or inflamed, is called diverticulitis. The main cause of diverticular disease is a low-fiber diet.

Critical care patients are twice as likely to receive the wrong medication. Of these errors, 20% are life-threatening, and 42% require additional life-sustaining treatments.

An identified risk factor for osteoporosis is the intake of excessive amounts of vitamin A. Dietary intake of approximately double the recommended daily amount of vitamin A, by women, has been shown to reduce bone mineral density and increase the chances for hip fractures compared with women who consumed the recommended daily amount (or less) of vitamin A.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that all women age 65 years of age or older should be screened with bone densitometry.
