Answer: It is the zone of rapidly differing density and mineral composition at the base of the crust. It is crucial in that it is the top of the much denser mantle on which the crust floats.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: For instance: Start with the crust which is thin and brittle, the mantle is next and is much more dense than the crust, etc.
