Answer to Question 1

Rock strata that can trap oil and gas are known as stratigraphic traps. A reservoir rock has an overlying
cap rock, and it is the difference between the rock types that traps the hydrocarbons. Structural traps
result when rocks are deformed by folding, fracturing, or both. The hydrocarbons migrate to the tops
of these structures. These require only a good reservoir rock to hold the oil and gas.

Answer to Question 2

Fossils are useful in correlating and determining the age of strata, in determining types of depositional
environments, and in telling us about extinct forms of life.
