Answer to Question 1

Imagine building a fence at the time illustrated in Figure 4.2(b). Notice that the original fence is
already bent by flexing of the ground on either side of the fault. After an earthquake as in Figure 4.2
(d), the original fence would end up straight again. The new fence, however, would end up noticeably
curved after the earthquake, with each end bent in the direction of fault motion

Answer to Question 2

The elastic rebound theory. Strain energy builds up within rock masses along a fault line and is
released suddenly just as a rubber band snaps when it stretched and then released. This sends out a
pulse of energy felt as vibrations and shaking

A serious new warning has been established for pregnant women against taking ACE inhibitors during pregnancy. There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.

Hippocrates noted that blood separates into four differently colored liquids when removed from the body and examined: a pure red liquid mixed with white liquid material with a yellow-colored froth at the top and a black substance that settles underneath; he named these the four humors (for blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile).

A cataract is a clouding of the eyes' natural lens. As we age, some clouding of the lens may occur. The first sign of a cataract is usually blurry vision. Although glasses and other visual aids may at first help a person with cataracts, surgery may become inevitable. Cataract surgery is very successful in restoring vision, and it is the most frequently performed surgery in the United States.
