Answer: Earth is close enough to the Sun that we have liquid water, but not so close that the water heats up and boils away. Earth is large enough to have sufficient gravity to hold in an atmosphere, but not so much gravity that the atmosphere becomes oppressive. Earth is close enough to the Sun that we receive solar radiation necessary for life, but not so much that it is too hot for life to exist.
