Answer to Question 1

A floodplain is the land surface adjacent to the channel constructed by the river, and it gets inundated by floods. Flood waters deposit sediments, with coarsest particles deposited nearest to the channel reflecting waning stream power. The area nearest the channel is often higher in elevation and termed a natural levee.

Answer to Question 2

Volcanic ash breaks down rapidly in chemical weathering, which dominates in humid regions, and provides essential nutrients for plants. The humid climate provides plenty of water, sometimes too much, so irrigation would be necessary to prevent erosion.

This is partially backed up by the fact that early grandfather clocks displayed IIII for the number 4 instead of IV. Early clockmakers apparently thought that the IIII balanced out the VIII (used for the number 8) on the clock face and that it just looked better.
