Diplococci are spherically shaped bacteria that occur in pairs; gram-positive organisms appear blue or violet. Gram-negative organisms have a red appearance from the counterstain. Staphylo-cocci are cocci that occur in irregular clusters. Bacilli are rodlike organisms.
