Answer to Question 1

A
Clinical manifestations associated with the more negative intrapleural pressures needed during inspiration include, but are not limited to, seesaw breathing movement and cyanosis of the dependent thoracic areas. It is unlikely that your patient will have normal, vesicular breath sounds. Pulmonary edema is not associated with RDS.

Answer to Question 2

C
Allergic reaction to drugs can cause noncardiogenic pulmonary edema. The other listed options, and others, can cause cardiogenic pulmonary edema.

As many as 28% of hospitalized patients requiring mechanical ventilators to help them breathe (for more than 48 hours) will develop ventilator-associated pneumonia. Current therapy involves intravenous antibiotics, but new antibiotics that can be inhaled (and more directly treat the infection) are being developed.
