Answer to Question 1

A
RDS is caused by the lack of surfactant within the alveoli of the neonate. This leads to alveolar collapse (atelectasis). Segmental or lobar atelectasis is associated with a bronchial obstruction by a foreign body. Pulmonary fibrosis is not associated with RDS.

Answer to Question 2

D
The pyogenic membrane that surrounds the air-fluid filled cavity of a lung abscess is composed of fibrin, inflammatory cells, and granulation tissue.
