When taking a child's temperature, the nurse should consider his or her ability to cooperate, because if the child is uncooperative, the thermometer could break, or the reading could be inaccurate. The nurse should make sure side rails on beds and cribs are up at all times. Beds should always be in the lowest position unless performing specific procedures. The nurse should use disposable diapers unless the child is sensitive to them and the child should use only toys that can be disinfected. Families should be reminded that toys that cannot be disinfected may need to be thrown away.
