If there are no life-threatening problems to correct, the primary assessment usually can be completed within 60 seconds. The secondary assessment involves taking and recording the victim's vital signs and continues with a head-to-toe assessment. This secondary assessment should take from 1 to 2 minutes, unless injuries requiring immediate intervention are identified. If the person has life-threatening problems, the secondary assessment may be delayed until the person is being transported. Whenever assessing a person in an emergency, use the acronym ABCDE to help you remember the order for assessment: A = Airway and cervical spine; B = Breathing; C = Circulation and bleeding; D = Disability; E = Expose and examine. There is no tertiary assessment.
