The medulla's respiratory center automatically controls the depth and rate of respirations without requiring a person's conscious thought. The pons has centers that work with the medulla to produce a normal breathing rhythm. The cerebral cortex allows some voluntary control over breathing when talking, singing, eating, or changing the rate of breathing. You can even stop breathing for a minute or two by holding your breath. The medulla, however, will take over control eventually.
