Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
A fertilized ovum that becomes implanted outside the uterine cavity is an ectopic pregnancy. It usually involves the fallopian tube. A ruptured ectopic pregnancy is an emergency because the patient has abdominal pain and bleeding. The affected tube is opened and the products of conception are removed. Hemostasis is attained and the pelvic cavity is irrigated.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: C
Before any surgical procedure, a female patient has a pregnancy test and the following questions should be asked: age of menarche, date of last menstrual period, use of contraception, and sexual history. A surgical procedure or anesthetics given may be harmful to a developing embryo if the patient would be pregnant. The surgeon does a physical examination of the pelvis before the patient is prepped. This helps the surgeon determine the approach for the procedure.
