Once the patient has entered the OR, he or she is sedated enough so as not to be cognizant of what is happening, so it is acceptable for the circulating nurse to remain on the other side of the room attending to paperwork and staying away from the patient

The patient will be able to recognize the behavior of the circulating nurse. Positive actions include spending time with and staying close to the patient, paying close attention to the patient's needs, and keeping them safe from emotional and physical harm.

Removable prostheses such as contact lenses are removed before the administration of a general anesthetic because they can become dry and cause corneal abrasions.
