Answer to Question 1

A
Manipulative patients frequently make requests of many different staff, hoping one will give in. Having one decision maker provides consistency and prevents playing one staff member against another. Positive reinforcement of appropriate behaviors is more effective than negative reinforcement. Ignoring behavior can in some cases help extinguish the behavior, but more typically, manipulative behavior responds better to judicious use of confrontation. Antisocial patients suppress or conceal such feelings if present and would be very unlikely to admit to them, let alone discuss them.
