Partial seizures have focal signs and symptoms resulting from electrical discharge in a limited site in one brain hemisphere. Complex partial seizures are associated with impaired consciousness and usually originate from a focal point in the temporal lobe. Simple partial seizures have no accompanying impairment of consciousness and usually stem from primary motor, sensory, or visual cortical regions. Such seizures may have psychiatric manifestations, including memory dysfunction, affective auras, perceptual changes (eg, hallucinations), and depersonalization.
