Generalized seizures involve both hemispheres of the cerebrum, simultaneously with classic symptoms of loss of consciousness, tonic-clonic limb movements, tongue biting, and incontinence. Delirium that resolves gradually over a few minutes to many hours characterizes the postictal state.

Complex partial seizures are associated with impaired consciousness and usually originate from a focal point in the temporal lobe. Simple partial seizures have no accompanying impairment of consciousness and usually stem from primary motor, sensory, or visual cortical regions. Such seizures may have psychiatric manifestations, including memory dysfunction, affective auras, perceptual changes (eg, hallucinations), and depersonalization.
