Answer to Question 1

  • Both Helens are cool and stillPoe calls his Helen statue-like, H.D. speaks of her Helens still eyes, wan face, and cool feet. But while Poes poem is a hymn of loving praise to Helens beauty, H.D.s Helen is an object of hatred because her beauty sparked a long and terrible war. Ultimately, Poes Helen seems to be an abstract symbol of female beauty whereas H.D. imagines a real woman who has caused the death and destruction.
