Answer to Question 1

Sample the macroinvertebrates using a trap of some kind. Small hand-held nets (like a butterfly net) are sometimes
used. Pollution-intolerant species populations are reduced in polluted water, as compared to pollution-tolerant
species, which maintain normal levels.

Answer to Question 2

One way of classifying macroinvertebrates is in terms of their reaction to pollution. Using this system, we can
classify macroinvertebrates into three groups.
Group 1 organisms are pollution intolerant and easily killed by impurities in the water.
Group 2 organisms are somewhat pollution tolerant and can survive in slightly polluted water.
Group 3 organisms are pollution tolerant and can survive in all but the most heavily polluted water.
