Has the kind of plants growing in each area affected the physical properties of
  the soils? How?

What will be an ideal response?

Question 2

Given the measurements of soil water pH and water saturation for each of the
two sites, and assuming that all other things that affect plant growth such as
orientation, slope, and climate are the same, which of the two sites is better
suited for growing crop plants? Include in your answer all the evidence that
you have gathered in the experiments on physical soil properties.

Answer to Question 1

The answer to this question will vary and is dependent upon the two sites from
which the soil samples are collected

Answer to Question 2

Encourage your students to consider the optimal soil pH for the crop they propose
to grow and the water requirements of the crop plant in developing their answer.
They should also consider any specific temperature requirements, such as a
minimum number of days below a critical temperature, and relate this to the aspect
of the site.

When Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first mercury thermometer, he called "zero degrees" the lowest temperature he was able to attain with a mixture of ice and salt. For the upper point of his scale, he used 96°, which he measured as normal human body temperature (we know it to be 98.6° today because of more accurate thermometers).
