Answer to Question 1

Nine important considerations when starting a lawn by seeding include

2. Sow the seed properly according to the seed package label
3. Sow half the seed in a north-south direction and the other half in an east-west
direction
4. Cover the seed

6. Mulches applied evenly and lightly may be left in place and allow the grass to grow
through

7. On a sloped bank, use Curlex to help retain moisture
8. Water the seed to keep it moist
9. Avoid saturating the soil

Answer to Question 2

Examples of materials that are used to increase the organic matter in a new lawn are
well-rotted sawdust, weed-free, well-rotted manure, composted leaves and grass, or
commercial peat moss at the rate of 6 cubic feet per 1,000 square feet of land.

Answer to Question 3

Three of the following unique characteristics of the fine fescue grasses are that the grass
blade folds into a tight V in bright sunlight to conserve moisture, provide a cooling
effect, and reduce carbon dioxide. Other features include the following:
 Grow in shady areas
 Low-maintenance (minimal fertilizer, pesticide needed)
 Tolerate dry, infertile acidic soils
Require less water than other varieties of cool-season grasses
