Question 2

Before leaving for the weekend a greenhouse manager notices that the root substrate in his greenhouse is dry. There is insufficient time to thoroughly water before making an evening appointment which he has. He decides to use the available time and apply half of the water required to the whole crop. This he figures will buy him half of the standard length of time between waterings. What do you think about this manager's decision? Is it right or wrong and why?

Answer to Question 1

Use less limestone in the root substrate, use acid fertilizers, acid treat the
water (or reverse osmosis).

Answer to Question 2

It is wrong. The upper root substrate will be moistened to bench
capacity while the lower root substrate will not receive water. He should make
arrangements for someone else to do the job thoroughly or else plan to come in
early the next morning and do the job thoroughly.
