Answer to Question 1

Use less limestone in the root substrate, use acid fertilizers, acid treat the
water (or reverse osmosis).

Answer to Question 2

It is wrong. The upper root substrate will be moistened to bench
capacity while the lower root substrate will not receive water. He should make
arrangements for someone else to do the job thoroughly or else plan to come in
early the next morning and do the job thoroughly.
