Answer to Question 1

1. Sertraline

Rationale:
Sertraline is recommended to be the first-line treatment for postpartum depression. Paroxetine is the alternative first-line treatment for postpartum depression. Fluoxetine is not recommended for lactating women because of the long half-life and the risk of the medication crossing into the breast milk. Since it is not known if the client is breastfeeding, of the medications listed, sertraline is the safest for lactating and breastfeeding mothers. Diazepam is not used to treat postpartum depression.

Answer to Question 2

3. Thalamus

Rationale:
The thalamus is the main relay station for sensory information. Pain information is then transmitted to the cerebral cortex as well as the reticular and limbic system for the processing and interpretation of pain. The cerebral cortex is the second step in processing pain stimuli. The transmission of pain moves through the limbic system after the thalamus. Transmission of pain impulses occurs in the reticular system after traveling though the thalamus as the main relay station.
