Answer to Question 1

A
After administering an injection, the nurse should not recap the needle. Used needles should be disposed of in the sharps container to prevent needle sticks. The ampule should be broken by wrapping a sterile gauze pad around the neck of the ampule and breaking the ampule away from the nurse. Air should not be injected into an ampule. After removing the medication from an ampule, the needle should be changed before administering the medication to a patient.

Answer to Question 2

A
The gauge of the needle refers to the diameter of the shaft. The larger the gauge number, the smaller the diameter of the shaft. The largest gauge needle would be 18 and the smallest gauge would be 25.

Certain triggers may cause a drug abuser to relapse. Research shows that long-term drug abuse results in significant changes in brain function that persist long after an individual stops using drugs. It is most important to realize that the same is true of not just illegal substances but alcohol and tobacco as well.
