Substance abuse is defined as self-administration of a drug for prolonged periods or in excessive amounts to the point of producing physical or psychological dependence, impairing functions of body organs, reducing the ability to function in usual activities of daily living, and decreasing the ability and motivation for function as a productive member of society.
