C. Have client resist pressure applied by attempting to move against resistance (e.g., flex elbow). Have client maintain resistance until told to stop. Compare symmetrical muscle groups. Note weakness, and compare right with left. Compares symmetrical muscle groups for strength.
A. Full active ROM is present in all joints with good muscle tone and absence of contractures, spasticity, or muscular weakness.
B. If muscle weakness is identified, measure muscle size with tape measure placed around body of muscle. Compare with same muscle on opposite side of body
D. Inspect gait as client walks and stands. Observe for foot dragging, shuffling or limping, balance, presence of obvious deformity in lower extremities, and position of the trunk in relation to the legs. Gait is more natural if client is unaware of nurse's observation. The observations may indicate a neuromusculoskeleta l disorder.
