Work accident rates in this century are evidence of the success of the safety movement in the United States. As the amount of attention given to workplace safety and health has increased, the accident rate has decreased. According to the National Safety Council,
Between 1912 and 2001, accidental work deaths per 100,000 population were reduced 81 percent, from 21 to 4 . In 1912, an estimated 18,000 to 21,000 workers' lives were lost. In 2001, in a workforce more than triple in size and producing 11 times the goods and services, there were approximately 10,000 work deaths.
