The red color attracted our attention in prehistoric times. With the advent of the telescopes, changing polar caps and dark markings on a rotating disk were seen. We are seeing the surface of another planet, and it had clouds, dust storms, polar caps and other seasonal changes, all seen from Earth. Of course, Lowell's canals just added to the obsession.
