Why have refrigerators been the focus of so much research in lowering energy use?

Answer to Question 1

Every home has one, they eventually must be replaced, and the oldest models used
huge amounts of energy. The reduction in energy use by refrigerators has saved building a
substantial number of generating facilities.

Answer to Question 2

Table 20.8 says that there will probably be 1 cancer per 100 Sv. So, the collective
dose of 100 person-sieverts will probably lead to a single cancer in this group.
