What is the significance of the ser alb being 2.2 g/dl? Discuss the pathophysiological effects this could have on LT's GI tract.

Answer to Question 1

Low Ser Alb described above. Possible contamination of bacterial overgrowth in the intestines from decreased immune response and/or excessive use of antibiotics that kill only a select populations of GI bacterial flora. Yeast infection in the GI tract d/t decreased immune response or antibiotics that suppress the GI bacterial flora but do not harm yeast. Consider medications being given that could cause diarrhea.

Answer to Question 2

Ser Alb helps to maintain oncotic pressure in the blood, which means it helps to hold fluid in the vascular system. When Ser Alb drops, this ability decreases. When Ser Alb drops below about 2.5 g/dl, edema is almost always a problem, particularly if the Ser Alb drops acutely. The resulting edema can be present in the GI tract, making it difficult for proper absorption to take place. The end result is usually diarrhea.
