Answer to Question 1

Surgery is a shock to the body and causes peristalsis to either be greatly diminished or totally stopped. When BS can be heard and N/G drainage has diminished, clear liquids are usually started to further stimulate the GI tract to return to normal function. Refeeding by the GI tract usually would not start until BS were strong. I say usually because some tube feedings are promoted as having the ability to be started in the absence of BS.
