Answer to Question 1

It decreases hepatic glucose production and intestinal absorption of glucose and improves insulin sensitivity. Side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating, flatulence, and anorexia. It may also cause an unpleasant or metallic taste.

Answer to Question 2

The dark stools could indicate GI bleeding that is a few days old.
