Answer to Question 1

Function of Laxatives: to facilitate the passage of bowel contents at time of defecation and, therefore, prevent or treat constipation. This can be accomplished by: increasing peristalsis by irritating the intestinal mucosa; lubricating the intestinal walls; softening the bowel contents by increasing the amount of water in the intestines. In this case, SP probably was hoping the laxatives would cause the food she had eaten to pass through without being utilized and thus not cause her to gain weight.

Function of Diuretics: promote urine formation by increasing the GFR or by decreasing reabsorption in the renal tubules. In this case, SP was hoping for her to rid her body of excess water to reduce her weight.

Answer to Question 2

Induces vomiting by acting locally on the gastric mucosa and centrally on the chemoreceptor trigger zone. Adverse reactions: CNS - depression. CV: cardiac arrhythmias, bradycardia, hypotension, atrial fibrillation, or fatal myocarditis after ingestion of excessive dose. GI: diarrhea.
