Answer to Question 1

The female athlete triad occurs when a female exercises excessively while consuming too few calories in pursuit of a low weight or body size. The three interrelated conditions that make up the triad are: disordered eating, menstrual dysfunction, and premature osteoporosis. Any female whose menstrual cycles are more than 35 days apart or who misses three menstrual cycles should be evaluated by a physician.

If any of these symptoms occur, stop physical activity, get out of the sun, and start drinking fluid:

Decreased perspiration

Cramping

Weakness

Flushed skin

Throbbing head

Nausea/vomiting

Diarrhea

Numbness in the extremities

Blurred vision

Unsteadiness

Disorientation

Incoherency
