Answer to Question 1

Foodservice organizations can be likened to living organisms. The whole organism or system
consists of a series of parts. Each part plays an important and vital role in the provision of a
complete and high-quality foodservice experience. If any part of the system is defective, it will
damage the entire organization. If kitchen teams are not sympathetic to one another and do not
work together in a complementary fashion, the food service product may break up. If the discord
is serious, it could become irreparable. A key function in maintaining a healthy foodservice
product is for the boundaries that exist among its parts to remain open, allowing for the exchange
of ideas and information. If boundaries are closed, the organism itself (the foodservice product)
will be seriously damaged and possibly disappear.
