Answer to Question 1

Certainly, the hiring of Hanson created such a risk. However, as Hanson notes in
his report, The Body Shop went to extremes to ensure his independence.

Answer to Question 2

The Body Shop's owners had positioned the company as an ethical, values-driven
organization. By doing so, they had established a standard higher than just
weathering the storm. A failure to act decisively would have cast doubts on the
company's credibility and undermined its claim of being an ethical, values-driven
company.
