Answer to Question 1

Publicizing the Hanson audit reinforced the third-party credibility The Body Shop
sought. Burying the report would have left an impression that the company had
something to hide. And the great majority of the report was favorable.

Answer to Question 2

In the broadest sense, good ethics is good business. Studies have shown that
ethical practices probably help businesses and that unethical practices definitely
hurt businesses. This is especially true in the case of The Body Shop, which made
ethical business practices the cornerstone of its enterprise. It is likely that many
of its customers were attracted by the company's business ethics. These
customers can just as quickly be turned off by a company's failure to live up to its
promises. By facing, accepting, and acting upon criticism, The Body Shop
strengthened its claim to be an ethical, values-driven business. It also
strengthened its claim to consumers attracted to those kinds of businesses.
