If you had been an ACOG public relations official, how might you have responded to the mayor's joke about using journalists for target practice?

Question 2

Was it fair of the news media to publish and broadcast so many negative accounts of ACOG's media relations? Weren't the media there to report on the athletic events?

Answer to Question 1

You should have encouraged the mayor to apologize and say the remark was an
ill-advised attempt at humor. Perhaps turning the joke back on himself, the
mayor could have offered to show his true leadership abilities by volunteering to
be the first target. Self-deprecating humor often deflects criticism. But more
importantly, you should have convinced the ACOG leadership to listen to and
attempt to resolve the difficulties faced by the media.

Answer to Question 2

It doesn't really matter whether or not the criticism was fair. In the United
States, the media are free to report on whatever they want. The real issues are
why ACOG opened itself to criticism in the first place, and the steps it did -- or
didn't -- take to resolve problems.
