Answer: One reason might be a subculture of violence combined with a code of honor that demands responses. The subculture of violence, according to the text, is believed to have stemmed from the violent institution of slavery. A second reason, may be the warmer temperatures, which occur all year long. Higher levels of violence ma y also stem from the higher levels of economic deprivation when compared to other regions. Additionally, the South does have a higher rate of gun-ownership rate.
