Answer to Question 1

Food poverty occurs when people go without nourishing meals not because there is no food nearby to purchase but because they lack sufficient money to pay both for the food they need and for other necessities, such as clothing, housing, medicines, and utilities. The likelihood of food poverty increases with problems such as abuse of alcohol and other drugs, mental or physical illness, lack of awareness of or access to available food programs, and reluctance to accept what some perceive as government handouts or charity.
