Answer to Question 1

Though overweight/obese women have excess body fat, they still need adequate nutrition to support a healthy pregnancy. All women need adequate protein from a variety of food sources to support the development of the placenta and fetal tissues. Women need a variety of foods to provide all of the vitamins and minerals that are needed for a healthy pregnancy. For example, a woman needs enough vitamin A, vitamin B12, and folate to support the development of cells for the fetus and for her red blood cell supply. She also needs enough vitamin D and calcium to support the development of fetal bones and to maintain her bone density. She needs enough iron and zinc to support blood health and cell development.
