They are associated with each other only when the overall diet provides more calories than are needed by the body. This pattern will result in weight gain. People who consume a lot of simple sugars as part of a diet providing excess energy relative to their bodies' energy needs may have an increased risk of developing diabetes. Also, these people may eat or drink foods rich in simple sugars that displace more nutrient-dense whole foods. People who consume a lot of simple sugars but within a diet that does not supply excess energy may not be at increased risk of developing diabetes.
