Answer to Question 1

The main goals of the management of diabetes are blood glucose control, resolution of coexisting health problems, and health maintenance. The woman should be recommended to follow a normal healthy dietary pattern, reducing intake of drinks with artificial sweeteners. Foods low in glycemic index and high in fiber should be included in her diet because they have been shown to be helpful in glucose control. Additionally, she should incorporate brightly colored fruits and vegetables, whole grains and whole grain products, low-fat dairy products, poultry, fish, dried beans, nuts and seeds into her diet.
