During pregnancy, the RDA for iron increases to support the
increased needs of the mother and the fetus. Fetal needs
include sufficient iron for growth and development. Needs of
the mother include energy production and support of tissue
growth. Impaired iron status during pregnancy increases risk
of delivering low-birth-weight babies or premature babies,
and even increased risk of maternal death.
